From times immemorial Jews live in Moldova. The first Jewish communities were formed in the southern regions of our country in XVI century.
For many centuries Jewish families accumulated the objects of religion, culture and household items. Unfortunately, lots of these objects are lost forever. Therefore, one of the objectives of the Jewish Community of the Republic of Moldova is to preserve Jewish heritage of our republic.
Guided by this purpose, in the period of 2013-2014 the Jewish Community was carrying out the project “Virtual museum of Judaica in Moldova” “On the trails of history”.
The aim of the project the creation of the electronic catalogue of the Judaic objects from regional centers of the republic, developed in accordance with state and European standards, with user-friendly interface for saving and rendering to the younger generation of the rich Jewish heritage of Moldova.
In order to create the exhibits related to Jewish history of this country, the project team which worked over the project has held unique investigations and visited the communities of Soroca, Balti, Tiraspol, Rybnita, Orhei, Chisinau and villages Rascov and Ciuciuleni. The history of our region has gone through many contradictory stages including: pale of settlement, 77 synagogues and prayer houses just in Chisinau, tragic Pogroms of 1903 and 1905, the heyday of Jewish agricultural colonies, horrors of Holocaust, attempts to restore Jewish community after the Second World War, mass aliyah in the early 90’s and, of course, current revival of Jewish life.
The members of the Jewish Community of the whole country, including left-bank of the Dniester and the team of experts have been working hard to carefully place each exhibit of this unique collection in accordance with its historical identity. Assembled collection has been digitized and placed on the web-platform that allows you to see, save and enrich our heritage. This is a modern and easy accessible virtual resource, which we hope that will give “food for thought” and will become a source of inspiration for successful future actions!
The visitors of the museum will see light and dark sides of the history, happy faces and tears, will be guests in the houses of those times and experience the atmosphere of the holiday. Welcome to the first Virtual Museum of Judaica in Moldova!
